The following is the text of a typewritten note was found amongst my grandmother's (Mattie Laura PORTER...married Jacob Rogers DUPREE in 1921) documents:

Rocky Mount, N.C., August 13th, 1923.

This is to state that at the division of the slaves of James S. Battle in 1855, the following were among those allotted to Mrs. Martha A. Battle, wife of Kemp P. Battle:

Haywood Battle28 yearsvalued at $800.00
Wife - Prissy Battle25 yearsvalued at $650.00
Hannah Battle8 yearsvalued at $450.00
