Feb. 25, 1768 - Petition of Thomas Baker of St. James-Santee Parish:

Thomas Baker imported in the Ship PEARL, Walter Buchanan, Master, from the Port of Dublin in Ireland, One Negro Man, being his Property some Time past. That your Petitioner having retired from the army and intending to become a Resident in this Province as his chief Motive and only Reason for importing the said Negro Man. The Public Treasurer of this Province demands the Duty usually paid on the Importation of Slaves from his Majesty's Plantations and Colonies. Asking for Exemption from said Duty or Tax. ------------------------------
