AFRICA. The continent that gave birth to all humanity. African people on the continent today make up over 12% of the world's population. Contemporary Africa is comprised of 54 nations and over 1,000 linguistic/cultural groups - more languages than are spoken on any other continent. Of these, about 50 have 500,000 or more speakers. To give an example of the diversity -a large country like Nigeria, with a population of over 127 million has more than 200 ethnic groups, and 4 major linguistic groups: Hausa and Fulani in north, Yoruba in southwest, and Igbo in southeast.

The Sahara desert divides the continent. To the north are Arabic peoples and Berbers, including the Tuaregs. Sub-Saharan Africa is occupied by diverse ethnic groups like the Fulani, Yoruba, Ashanti, Igbo, Kongo, Zulu, Akan, Masai, and Hausa. Nilotic peoples like the Amhara, and Oromo occupy the North Eastern Horn (Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea). There are also islands off the African coast, the largest of which is Madagascar.

Most of the Africans kidnapped and brought to the New World during the era of the slave trade came from Central and West Africa - with the largest group of slaves going to Brazil.

The US census bureau lists 558,000 persons born in Africa currently living in the US, but this figure is low and being debated due to problems with data collection the figure is probably closer to one million.

What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task. This is the price and the promise of citizenship. - President Barack Obama

Ancestral cooking, heritage cooking, soul food . . . no matter what you call it, the meat, vegetable and side dishes and the cooking methods handed down to us by our parents, grandparents and their forebears are an important part of what ties us to our African homeland. As genealogists, we also look for clues in the types of foods and how they are prepared to determine where our ancestors came from on the continent as well as to the traditions forged in different places in the Americas to determine their more recent origins.

Welcome to the AfriGeneas Brick Wall Forum. This forum is a moderated board for advanced researchers only.

A Brick Wall is a genealogical dead-end. It's a problem that you just can't solve no matter how many times you return to it. You know you've hit a Brick wall when you've exhausted every avenue of research and are totally frustrated. But there are tried and true methods used by professional genealogists that can help you smash through Brick Walls. Maybe you've stared at the problem so long that you've overlooked something obvious. Maybe there are records that you missed. Or maybe there's someone researching an ancillary line that can provide the clue that you need to move on.

Our experts are here to help. Describe your Brick Wall in detail along with your documentation. But be forewarned. If we don't think you've done the basic work, we won't even consider your problem and will refer you to another forum for assistance. Remember, this forum is for the advanced researcher. If you're just starting out or you've only done research online or have never visited NARA or your state archives, have never sifted through dusty courthouse records or walked a cemetery or visited a Family History Center, if you don't belong to a genealogical society, if oyu don't know then don't post here. Remember, this forum is for advanced researchers only.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting!

Welcome to Forum-Carib!! Our Forum covers the numerous islands of the West Indies and the countries of North, Central and South America that border on the Caribbean. Diverse cultures have developed in many areas as a result of multiple European backgrounds in their histories. Island-hopping is not a new phenomenon, and emigration is common, so records may be found in a wide variety of places. Let's work as a TEAM, sharing our methods, tips, and resources to help each other find our ancestors.

There are many potential localities involved; for ease of exploration, we ask you to include the name of your island or country in the subject line of your post.

Please read the Terms of Use before you post.

Welcome to the AfriGeneas Genealogy Technology Forum.

Genealogical research has come a long way, Baby. Where would we be today without computers? Without GEDCOM? Without microfiche, microfilm and machines to view them? Without cameras, tape recorders, scanners or photocopiers. Without the Master Genealogist, Personal Ancestral File or Family Tree Maker? Without the internet--bulletin boards, email, the web. Without Rootsweb, Ancestry, Heritage Quest or the AfriGeneas Forums? Without search engines!

No matter how we do our genealogy these days, there's no question that we're indebted to technology for helping us to get back to the past at lightning speed. And to preserve it for future generations. This forum is for the discussion of all things technological as it relates to genealogy -- hardware, software, websites, storage media, anything that helps us in the search for the ancestors. Lets talk about what works, what doesn't, successes, great new finds, snafus, glitches. Each one, teach one.

Welcome to the Reconstruction Period Research Forum. W. E. B. Du Bois, in his classic study of the role of the African American In the post-Civil War Reconstruction finds: "The story of transplanting millions of Africans to the new world and of their bondage for four centuries, is a fascinating one. Particularly interesting for students of human culture is the sudden freeing of these Black folk in the Nineteenth Century and the attempt through them, to reconstruct the basis of American democracy from 1860-1880." His study has significance for the family researcher since "it seeks to tell and interpret those twenty years of fateful history with especial reference to the efforts and experience of the Black folk themselves."

Welcome to the Surnames and Family Research Forum. This is the place for surnames queries, for asking all those questions about "getting started", planning a research strategy, evaluating findings, making a change of direction, requesting lookups and sharing information, knowledge and tips.

If this is your first time here, before you post a question, make sure you have read the detailed information in Guidelines for Beginners. You will gain a good research footing and can learn how to frame your questions. This Family Group Sheet may also help in getting started.

If you are asking for help finding ancestors or living relatives please put the surname you are researching in your SUBJECT line when you post a message. Give us as much information as you know about the TIME PERIOD they were living in a SPECIFIC state, what COUNTY they lived in, and if possible the name of the CITY or TOWN. If you don't know how old they were give us a good "guesstimate". For example: GREEN, Henry, Chester County PA, born abt.1900. If you need help with a specific research area make that clear. Ask for "Help with Military Records" instead of just hollering HELP!!! You will get much better results that way. And we won't have to try to figure out how to help you, we will know.

We look forward to getting to know about you and your research, and hope you will become a regular member of the AfriGeneas family.

Please read the Terms of Use before you post.

The continents of, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and Antarctica hold clues, keys, facts, documents and relations in our ancestral search. This forum is the place to discuss and combine our efforts to research these ROOTS! This is also the place for researching Multiethnic, Multicultural, Multiracial, biracial and triracial families and for discussing the difficulties in research as well as resources available and needed. A major objective would be to reduce the stigma faced too often by such heritage and to assist each of us to accept all parts of who we are. AfriGeneas World Research Forum - Message Index
