Re: Freedmen benefits
In Response To: Freedmen benefits ()
There do not appear to be benefits for Freedmen descendents generally, because the BIA does not issue the CDIB (certificate of indian blood) card to freedmen descendents and only the Seminole has continued to enroll freedmen descendents (although, as you may have heard), the courts and the BIA do not appear to be upholding this disenrollment. Without either a CDIB card or a tribal enrollment, there are not going to be any benefits for freedmen descendents. This is one of the reason that we must try to get a legislative fix to classify the Freedmen descendents as "indians by blood" for BIA purposes. Let as many people as possible, especially public officials know how you feel about the "Jim Crow" rolls which are being used to exclude blacks even though the original treaties signed between the US government and the 5 tribes in 1866 set up the Freedmen as equal to the "Indians by blood (which were the full bloods and those mixed with white ancestry).
