I agree that the dawes rolls should not be the final authority; but I dont think that the BIA is going to budge off of them as the "BIA Bible" for the 5 tribes. One problem with going back several years prior to the Dawes rolls is that if someone died just before the enrollment period (such as my grandmother) they werent allowed to enroll them posthumously. and record blood info. Also, for several years, the tribes did not allow legal marriages between blacks and Indians (between about 1840-1866?) in the case of the Cherokee, so it is much harder to trace that "Indian blood" if it came from that period.
