I know that it is painful to have the history of one's family so hidden. And yes, many peoples had or sold others into slavery. I am not sure from what source you heard that many tribes lost land due to insisting on keeping slaves, but do keep in mind that there are many sides to any one story. In many oral family histories, there were tribes who also protected Black relatives/loved ones from going back into slavery by the intelligent trickery of pretending to be the slaver themselves: in other words many Native American tribes had people they protected form slavery by lying to Europeans so that it was thought the Blacks in their midst were slaves.
