Yes the Shields were indeed part of the Seminole Negro Indian Scouts as they were officially called. Some of them are buried at the Seminole Scout Cemetery in Brackettville Texas! I visited that cemetery 3 years ago and recall seeing some of their graves.

There is quite a bit of information on the Shields through the pension files of the Scouts which you can obtain through the National Archives. I will have to look at some of my notes to see what else that I can find for you. I am not sure when the Shields returned from Mexico and arrived in Texas but my memory tells me that they became Scouts rather early.

I shall take a look at my resources and get back to you with more info.
