Re: Majority Rules - Creek Nation

IV said:
cherokee cherokee cherokee read the subject line this was a thread aobut the creek nation and my general question was why black people wanted to be with people that didnt want them?

My reply:
The subject started that way, but you took it into a completely different direction by asking why "freedmen" wanted to be in a nation that didn't want them. We merely replied to your query. I speak in terms of the Cherokees because it is the Cherokees that I know best. That these references can be useful to an understanding of the other FCT Freedmen is a fact.

IV said:
You must feel like you have to speak for the black people...

My reply:
NO, I do not feel I must speak for black people or anyone but myself. I do feel I must speak on BEHALF of oppressed people and in this instance it happens to be black folks.

IV said:
...and what you say is gospel but the fact still is you ain't black you can never speak for the blacks and you need to get your cherokee house in order.

My reply:
I have never said I was black, even though I may have a black ancestor. I have never said I speak for black or Freedmen, I only speak on behalf of them. Regarding our Cherokee house, the Freedmen issue is but one part of the disorder of our household. Would you have us ignore that part because those suffering are black? Are the money issues within our tribe more important than the Freedmen because they are black?

IV said:
nobody ask the thin bloods your words about anything because i imagine they be white and that make them ok.

My reply:
You got that right. When white Cherokees run the tribe for themselves while black and Indian Cherokees suffer at their hands, something needs to be done about it. There is one good reason to be a member, the ability to "do something about it."

IV said:
it is only when the black people show up that people start aksing questions? thats the problem you already said it its the racist in the tribe and if they are silent full blood or thin than they just as guilty in my book.

My reply:
Absolutely right. Black Cherokees and Indian Cherokees must stand up for themselves. But with people like you throwing road blocks in their way, critcizing them for standing up for their rights, what chance do they have? Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place, the Freedmen have ignorant racist tribal members on one said and ignorant racist people like you on the other. There is plenty of guilt to go around and you bear your own share by trying to trip the Freedmen as they travel their path to restoration of rights and privileges of tribal citizenship.

IV said:
your question is pretty stupid about me explaining why i wont to be a us citizen. i was born a citizen, didnt have to ask, didnt have to proof it, just is.

My reply:
I'm gonna mention Cherokees again. You should read the opinion of the Cherokee Court in Allen V. Council wherein the Court stated that the Freedmen were, by law, citizens of the Cherokee Nation the day before the adoption of the 1976 Constitution and were naturally citizens the day after. The Treaty of 1866 states that the Freedmen and their descendnats shall have rights equal to Native Cherokees. These two facts, easily discernable by an average thinker point to one INESCAPABLE fact, the Freedmen were BORN citizens of their respective Nation. I agree with you when you state you didn't have to ask for it and you didn't have to prove it. The same is true for the Freedmen. So why should they have to answer such a question when you don't.

IV said:
its you indians running around trying to proof something of how you been done wrong and your way of life is so dam superior as you cheat each other and the freedmen over money and everything else.

My reply:
Many people have been done wrong in the course of history. We have as much right to remember our tragedy as we do our triumph. It is not we Indians who claim our way of life is superior. In fact, we Indians would prefer that no one know much at all about our traditional lives. Whatever way of life we may live has no bearing whatsoever upon the rights or citizenship of tribal members who not live our way of life. The fact that we have an administration running or government that is corrupt and damaging not only to Indians, but to all tribal citizens should make those who are honest and trustworthy seek to make changes to better the lives of tribal people. Therein lies another good reason for the Freedmen to be citizens. They can help their fellow citizens keep an eye on the tribe.

IV said:
...you got all that corruption in your tribe and money disappering but you would think you woudl be trying to work on that...

My reply:
Your words reveal a poorly informed assumption on your part that I and other Cherokees, including some Black Cherokees, white Cherokees and Indian Cherokees, have been ignoring the corruption and theft going on in our Nations. The Freedmen cannot address the problems faced by our people at the hands of the tribal government if they lose their citizenship. The solution to all of our woes may be found among the children of the Freedmen. What a tragedy if that child is torn away from us or worse, is driven away us by your words and we never know the contribution he/she might have made.

IV said:
...but no you trying to tell the blacks what they should be doing.

My reply:
I have never told "blacks" what they should be doing. We are not talking about blacks. We are talking about Freedmen and their descendants who happen to be black and eligible for citizenship, at least in the Cherokee and Seminole Nations. Because they are my fellow citizens, I have an obligation to them and they to me that transcends race and is rooted in our shared tribal experience. By having that shared heritage, I have the right to speak from the perspectives I have taken on behalf of the Freedmen.

IV said:
heck so far i don't think any freedmen added to this talk just you cherokees whats up with that?

My reply:
I will leave those who already responded to your discord to respond or not for themselves. I know who among them are Freedmen and their voices are being heard.

IV said:
just because i asks why blacks wont to be in the tribe now all of a sudden i'm holding them back aint that a beach!

My reply:
You're dam right its a beach. Its always a beach when people who should be encouraging your step up to bring you down.

IV said:
you aught to ask your full bloods thin bloods and chief what they're problem is.

My reply:
I would say that the Freedmen should be asking that question. But then someone would just come along and ask them why, why why.
