Re: Oklahoma Black Seminole Indians
In Response To: Oklahoma Black Seminole Indians ()
Much has been written about the Oklhoma Black Seminoles. These books will assist you: -Africans and Seminoles-Daniel Littlefield
Note that before 1907 Oklahoma was known as Indian Territory and so many of the references in these books to Indian Territory and the Freedmen from the Seminole are really the Oklahoma Black Seminoles. Note also that the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma is located in Wewoka Oklahoma. There are 14 bands within the nation. Of the 14 bands 2 of them are the black---the Freedmen bands. These are descendants of the Africans who lived among the Seminoles. The two bands are known as the Dosar Barkus Band and the Caesar Bruner Band. I hope this information is helpful to you. -Angela- [29 Mar 2000] Messages In This Thread
