I have been attempting to obtain information about my Indian heritage. According to the 1870 Texas Census my gg-grandmother's father was born in I.T. (Cherokee Nation). Her maiden name was Peel. My gg-grandmother was born in Alabama. Under race she is listed as "MU" as are all her children. She married my gg-grandfather surname (Elliott). All their children were born in Texas. I have checked the National Archives and did not see any surnames of "Peel" listed on any of the rolls. Is it possible that she could have registered under her married name "Elliott". I know that by oral tradition that the Elliotts are of Indian ancestory. I also know that some of my relatives from this family eventually ended up in OK. The files in the National Archives was so confusing that I didn't know heads from tails. Any help would be appreciated.
