When I began researching my Cherokee Freedmen ancestors I read "Slavery and the Evolution of Cherokee Society 1540 - 1866" by Theda Perdue.

I also bought "Index to the Cherokee Freedmen Enrollment Cards of the Dawes Commission" by Jo Ann Curls Page.
