Re: Choctaw Freedman Census Records
In Response To: Choctaw Freedman Census Records ()
The Choctaw Nation did not free their slaves until 1866 when the Treaty of 1866 required them to do so. Therefore there were no "Freed" men (freedmen) or women. Freedman records did not come to exist until those held in bondage were freed. The emigration lists did not always match the lists of those who owned slaves over the 35 year period from Removal (1831) to their final release of their slaves in 1866. If you look at the 1860 Slave Schedule for the Federal Census you might get some additional information on those who owned your family as slaves. Hopefully that might help.
