I am not to my knowledge an OK Freedman descendent but my son is. I would like to share the information I have gathered.
Arch LANDRUM b. Jan 1835 GA d.? (son of Jesse & Winnie RATLIFF) and his wife Winnie (nee:RATCLIFF) b. Feb. 1824 GA d.? (daughter of Lucy MUSRAT b.? d.?) were both slaves of Jim LANDRUM. According to the 7 June 1900 Federal census of the Indian Territory Cherokee Nation Winnie LANDRUM had six children. Only two of them were alive at that time. John TOWERS b. Apr 1841I.T. d.? (Winnie's son by Jerry TOWERS b.? d.?) was listed on the census as living with Arch and Winnie at that time.
The other son Spencer LANDRUM b. Oct 1843 I.T. d.? was living in the same area during this census period with his wife Martha b. Dec 1862 KS d.? (nee:VANN daughter of Gilbert VANN b.? d.? and Susan PEE b.? d.?; all three former slaves of Joe "Rich Joe" VANN). Spencer had a daughter Florence LANE b. approx 1878 IT. d.? Her mother was Mary ROWE Florence married Dry LANE b.? d.? and they had a daughter Della b. approx . 1899 I.T. d.? Spence and Martha had the following children: Gilbert (sometimes listed as Albert) b.Aug 1881 I.T. d?; Obee b. Sep 1891 I.T. d.?; and Gertie b. Feb 1895 I.T. d.?
By the the 1910 census Arch is widowed. Living with him are Spence along with his three children by Martha plus a two year-old-son Elija. I haven't found out why Martha is not listed here or if she is Elija's mother.
By studying Jo Ann Curls Page compiled index re: the Dawes Commission I have found that these LANDRUMS are related to the following surnames: BOWLES BROWN CLINCH DOWNING JOHNSON JONES LANE LYNCH MARTIN MUSRAT/MUSKRAT PEE RATCLIFF RATLIFF ROGERS ROWE THOMAS TOWERS TUCKER VANN WARD WHITMIRE and still counting!
Does any of this sound familiar? Can someone help fill in the "?" ? Feel freeto contact me. Also will do lookups in Jo Ann Curls Page's book. This is a great book because in almost all cases it lists parents of enrollees.
