Re: Did the "freedmen" ever call themselves Black
In Response To: Did the "freedmen" ever call themselves Black Dutc ()
I have read that the term "Black Dutch" was used by a people called Melungeons. They were of mixed African Portuguese (sometimes Spanish) and Indian descent. They generally lived in the southern United States. When laws were passed that adversely affected people of color many of the Melungeons hid their heritage and began calling themselves "Black Dutch" in order to protect themselves. In some families this term was passed through the generations without family members knowing that they were of mixed heritage. Through time many believed that they were white although they sometimes heard whisperings about bieng "Black Dutch". There are certain names that are common among the Melungeon. If you do a search on the web you can find some of these names and can compare. [21 Oct 1999] Messages In This Thread
