Dawes Applications in 1896 ?
My ancestor, Nancy Settle, died in 1896 in Indian Territory (Muskogee, OK). It is said that she applied to the Dawes Commission for land but was rejected.
Question: Isn't 1896 too early to have even applied to Dawes? Was that commission even in existance yet?
It is also said that she owned land there. If she was rejected, could she have just "purchased" land in IT?
