Re: Cherokee Chief Moves to Remove Cherokee citize

Greetings! Here we go----My ancestors lived in the area of present day Cherokee North carolina--My great great grandfather was half Cherokee (his father was a Littlejohn and nephew to Flying Squirrel (Chief of Paint Town). His mother was a mulatto slave owned by a White man. Ok--After the Civil War--Great Great goes before the Council--and is instructed to take up some land. So, they give him an allotment and he sets up the family homestead with his Melungeon wife and two small children--John and and great grandfather George. Indian agent Hester(Joseph) comes around making up the roll. He consults with Washington as to whether he is to include Indians of mixed Black ancestery. He is instructed to list those ones who the council recognized. We were recognized so Hester put us on and we got on the roll. Afterwards there was a stink with some of the Indians about the changing society. Come Churchill's roll--again we are on the roll.
