my grandfather's family settled in rembert, sc..it's a small town outside of sumter, sc...there's a lot of "wealthy" white americans of french decent in the northeast...anytime i run into a "WHITE AMERICAN" french person with the PORTEE surname...and i tell them that we share the same name....i can tell that they're a little embarassed...i understand that the name was issued only once in france and that most people with that last name share ancestry....i believe you when you say that native indian blood is ours because most black Portee's have exotic skin complexions and indian features...people often ask me if i'm from the carribean because they can't quite place the distinct features....
