Re: Surname Portee
In Response To: Re: Surname Portee ()

The Portee's were aristocrats that left france during the revolution. There were four settled in the carolinas, one settled in scotland, one settled in canada (castle de la portee) and I'm not sure were the other settled. The one that settled in the carolinas married into a cherokee indian chief's family (not sure of the spelling, still researching) the chief's name was Beauregard Giga?...when their children was not allowed to attend the schools because they were all white; they built the first interracial school in columbia south carolina. They also donated the land for the library of the university of south carolina. There is a portee street, alley, and private cemetary where there are portees, alton's, and jones'. My grandmother (Daisy Portee, daughter of Reuben Portee=french and native american and Corlester Fortson Portee=part irish part black)relayed this history to me. Other portee names (I'm still working on...) Ruth Portee, Heddi Portee, are all relatives but I'm still researching (my grandma has passed away and I'm still trying to piece things together). For more info, please contact me though I've got quite a ways to go.
Best regards.
