Re: Cemetaries for Chickasaw & Choctaw Freedman?

Regarding Chickasaw and Choctaw "freedmen" the two I know off the top of my head are the Hickory "Negro" cemetary in Carter County and a larger cemetary is located in the area adjacent to the Jehovah Baptist Church also in Carter County.

Both are located in what the locals call the country which is about 15 minutes outside Ardmore Oklahoma.

Many of the "freedmen" families can locate ancestors in these two cemetaries. The gravesite of my Great grandmother Bettie LIGON is located in Hickory along with members of the STEVENSON, ABRAM, NERO, SHANNON, DYER and PICKENS to name a few families I recall.

Norma mentions the Bill Hamm site and it is a good one for locating cemetaries in Oklahoma with descriptions on where they are located. I'll have to look for some old files that I noted others when I can get some free time.

I can't recall the exact title of the book but located in the Oklahoma Historical Society is a book that list many of the cemetaries in the state with notes indicating which were "Negro" and which were white. It's funny, I don't recall any that had a specific designation as "Indian" but I'm sure there are some?
