Re: Say What? Stidham Roll of Creek Self Emigrants
In Response To: Re: Say What? Stidham Roll of Creek Self Emigrants ()
The only Tuskegee Tribal Town Rolls that I know are the 1882 listed on the Creek Indian Researcher web site. John Jefferson was not listed nor did I find him on the Canadian Colored Town roll. I know that when John married Melinda Cow Tom, he followed traditional Creek customs and moved in with his wife's family. Perhaps that is why he is listed as Canadian Colored on the Dawes Freedmen Rolls. In the allotment papers there was another interview with John Jefferson in which he was again asked if he was a member of the Creek Nation which he replied yes. Then he was asked how did he become a citizen. His answer was "by blood." Perhaps he answered the question of which town he belonged was because (again citing traditional Creek custom) was that his mother was mvscogee cate and she belonged to Tuskegee. Just a conjecture.
