Good advice!!! Even tho' the process was a little different, I found my earliest known African American ancestral property owner, Lewis Adams, Lewis was my 3rd great-grandfather. A deed of conveyance (1829) and a plat map (1857) showing his property (Section,Township, Range) in the Champaign County, Ohio Auditor's Office.

Lewis Adams was manumitted (freed) in 1813 from Slavery in Shelby County, Kentucky,,, migrated to Ohio, registered as a FPOC in Champaign County, Ohio... and by 1829 had accumulated enough wealth to purchase 200 acres of land in that County.
