Where Was Your Ancestor's Land Allotment?

Have you ever wondered where your ancestor's land allotment was located? Unless your family has been fortunate to retain the land, then you may not know exactly where the allotment was. You are encouraged to look at some wonderful maps provided by the Oklahoma Historical Society.

When you match the description of the land from the Land Allotment records (found on Ancestry as well as Family Search) you can then find the Township number on the map as well as the Range. Then compare that location with a current map of the same area, and you will be able to determine the location of your ancestral land.

(There are other maps such as the one shared several months ago by Eli Grayson on Facebook that illustrated Creek Freedmen allotments.)

For others however the maps such as the one below will be useful. I also recommend that one then use the Google Street View feature to see what is there now, if the land is no longer in the family's possession.
