African-Native American Genealogy Forum
Freedman Track at Genealogy Institute
Next week the Midwest African American Genealogy Institute will unfold at the world famous Genealogy Center in Ft. Wayne, Indiana--the largest genealogy library in the nation.
For the first time, the genealogy community will also feature a track that focuses on the rich records to pursue for those who study the population once enslaved in Indian Territory.
Records that pre-date the era of the Dawes Commission will be presented and much in-depth discussion will unfold on how to go back even further for additional family data.
I am sharing the community here. Hopefully in the future more institutes and genealogical events will occur and will provide opportunities for Oklahoma-focused scholars and researchers to learn from each other and expand the knowledge base of the unique population of people known as Freedmen of Indian Territory.
