African-Native American Genealogy Forum
Freedman Track at Genealogy Institute
Coming, this July 12 classes focusing exclusively on the Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes will be offered at the Midwest African American Genealogy Institute.
This is the first time that a track focusing on Indian Territory Freedmen will be addressed in the genealogy community. Unique record sets, (including record sets never shared in the genealogy community before) will be shared and discussed.
Hopefully some of the participants will choose to become genealogy professionals, and join the very small club of researchers who specialize in Freedmen records. Very few people know much of this history and outside of a hand of scholars, none of whom are Freedmen. There are some scholars who do have ties to Oklahoma, but they contribute little to the conversation among Freedman descendants, do not engage with Freedmen descendant inquirers, who embark upon the quest to become more knowledgeable about this unique history.
The institute will unfold at the world-famous Genealogy Center at Allen County Library in Ft. Wayne Indiana. (This is the largest genealogy library in the country--second only to the library in Salt Lake City)
