Freedmen Elders in Skullyville Choctaw Nation
While studying the Skullyville community during Black History Month, the question arose about the elders and who they were during the time of the Dawes Commission. Skullyville was a rural sparsely populated community with less than 500 Freedmen at the time. Nevertheless these were small communities with families, and among some of the families were elders---persons over 60. Some had arrived during the years of the removal and others were born of their parents who were removed from Mississippi. I found a handful of elders and have decided to honor them, this month as well. For more information see link below.
