The Lone Slave of Fort Coffee Academy

While looking at the 1860 Slave Schedule in the Choctaw Nation, in the Skullyville area, an interesting entry was found. Slave schedules only include the names of the slave holder and the enslaved people are represented by small tic marks on the page. One interesting slave owner appeared, with 1 lone slave being held. The slave holder was a school--Fort Coffee Academy. A woman in her 50s was the school's "slave" and she alone was considered to be the "property" of the school.
