I understand that the Dawes Roll lists different surnames for Silas and John Jefferson but they are full brothers. My family is just one example of the countless faults with the Dawes Roll. Archivist Kent Carter wrote about its inherent flaws in his book, The Dawes Commission: And the Allotment of the Five Civilized Tribes, 1893-1914.
The Dawes Roll was about land. The US wanted to open up the land held in common by the Five Tribes. They did this by dissolving the Tribal Government and the mandatory allotment of individual lands. The Dawes Commissioner specifically used "The One Drop Rule" to enroll as many as possible onto the "Freedmen Roll."
I have Silas Jefferson's Death and Heirship Papers which states John is his full brother and even lists his "Freedman Roll #"
I have John Jefferson's Allotment Interview which he states he is Creek by blood and is from Tuskegee Town.
I have papers from Alabama, Macon County Court Documents listing Betsey and her children, Silas, John, Manuel, George, Mariah and Creasy. They lived at or near Fort Hull which is located near Tuskegee.
