Re: Creek Freedmen William and Monday Durant

Hello Tanisha,

I have written a few articles about Monday Durant on the African-NativerAmerican Blog. Note that there were two Monday Durant's. One was a grandfather to the other. There are a few images of the headstones of both on the blog, though written on different dates. One photo I took several years ago when a colleague and I visited Cane Creek Cemetery not far from Okmulgee. We both took photos of the cemetery that day and the younger Monday Durant was one of those photos taken that day.

The elder Rev. Monday Durant is buried in Muskogee in the Durant Family Cemetery. (See article below.) The Durant family was a leading family among Creeks and Creek Freedmen, and both of them were amazing leaders when they lived. You have a wonderfully rich history!

Note that the Durant cemetery is need of care, and hopefully there will be an effort from Creek Freedmen to restore this historic landmark, as will Agency Cemetery someday receive assistance also, only about a mile away.
