Genealogical Help

Greetings,

I have been on a quest to know my roots. As alot of African Americans claim to have native blood. I just want to verify the stories that have been passed down. My grandmother described him as being tall and she remembers combing his hair down his back. I watched the videos that suggested using the census and other records and it seems like the paper trail just ends. I do know that we have European blood in the family, which explains why Wallace's sister is fair. Here are some facts, my maternal 3rd great grandfather, Wallace Johnson/Johnston was born in Orange County VA abt 1861 and he died July 1946 in Gates County, NC. He is listed as C or (colored). I remember in one of the videos to look at maps of where Native Americans lived during my ancestor's life and it appears that the Saponi tribe lived in the area prior to 1861 and not the Cherokee as the story has been told. I found Wallace's death certificate and it shows that his parents were Wallace Johnson and Mary Walker (both of Orange County, VA). This is where the paper trail seems to end. Could you tell me where I should look next so that I could take this family further back

Thank you
Ray
