Cherokee/African, Walker Co., GA and Southern IL
My ggg grandmother Nancy Bryant, possibly Cherokee or Lumbee and African-American, was b. @1795 in South Carolina. In 1840, she is living in Walker Co., Georgia, with her children and one male slave. She is a few houses from her daughter Susannah Sarah and her husband Andrew Scott. We believe the slave was actually Nancy's husband Frederick Chavers.
In 1850, Nancy and children are in Union Co., IL, listed as mulattos. Andrew and Susanna Scott are in Williamson Co., IL. In 1860, Frederick Chavers shows up in Williamson Co., IL, in the household of Hannah Littlejohn Bryant, probably his daughter in law, and her children. Again, all are listed as mulattos. One of Nancy and Frederick's daughters, Catherine, names her parents as Nancy Hocking and Frederick Chavers on her marriage record.
According to the Cherokee Ration Books, a Chavers received rations, and was from the same area that Nancy was in in 1840. The 1835 Henderson Roll lists the names of those next to Chavers on the Rations List, again in the same area (Lookout Mountain, Walker Co., GA), but no Chavers. He's got to be there, but perhaps listed under a different name.
Has anyone done any work with the rations books? Can anyone help me make the Cherokee connecitons?
