Re: Bobby Blue Bland
In Response To: Re: Bobby Blue Bland ()

Actually I found a thread from 2006 that I initiated and got some great assistance and information, including the following.

Bobby Blue Bland was born Robert Calvin Brooks. He later took his father's surname Bland according to his biography on Malaco.com.

On the Shelby, Tennesee 1930 census I located one Robert Brooks age 3/12.

Robert Brooks
Home in 1930: District 1, Shelby, Tennessee
Age: 0
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1930
Birthplace: Tennessee
Relation to Head of House: Grandchild
Race: Negro
Household Members: Name Age
Wesley Smith 39
Bernie Smith 36
Martha Smith 18
Mary Smith 17
Josephine Smith 16
Beadtrice Smith 14
Alphonse Smith 11
Blanche Smith 9
Dude Smith 7
Nettie Smith 3
Robert Brooks 3/12
Maurice Brooks 3/12
Source Citation: Year: 1930; Census Place: District 1, Shelby, Tennessee; Roll: 2272; Page: 18A; Enumeration District: 158; Image: 70.0.

What I am trying to find is the father but may not ever know unless I get it from Bobby. Ironically, the names in his household were Brooks and Smith. These names are on my mother (Smith) side down in Coffeeville, MS, and my mother married a Bland. Since the Memphis area was the first migration stop north of Mississippi, I am guessing that the Blands, Brooks, and Smiths made their way up to Rosemark, outside of Memphis, as they did to Chicago.
