Can someone refresh my memory?

Wasn't it Danny Glover, as well as Don Cheatham who found out that they had ancestors who were Freedmen? I vaguely remember reading something about their finding out on a PBS special, or something like that.

I ask because if that is true, outside of the movie being able to stand on its own merits, if someone knows that stories like this need to be told.
