Cherokees, prior to the Dawes era, never referred to themselves as being part Cherokee. Even whites and blacks adopted into the tribe were referred to simply as Cherokees in every day parlance and as adopted whatever, ie adopted colored, in ethno-political terms used during census taking. Blood quantum was a foreign concept and did not gain widespread acceptance among tribe members until it was tied to services provided by the Bureau of Indians Affairs due to poverty brought about by land allottment and graft in the new state of Oklahoma.
