In Response To: grandmother born in vinita 1916 ()
Hi Marland - I also was born in Bartlesville Oklahoma as was my mother and brother. I was just talking with my mother and we were wondering if you knew Everett Steeples (whom I called "Brother". I used to walk to school with him and his sisters when I was a 6 year old. His family lived across the street from mine for a brief time in Bartlesville. I think he had a sister named Joyce and another sister whose name I can't remember. I seem to remember their mom passed away or became ill when I was in about the first grade. (not sure about this) We left Bartlesville and would go back to visit my grandmothers (great and great great). My mother's nickname was pumpkin and she used her father's last name of waters. So she was known as "Pumpkin Waters" (Her father's family, the Waters, were not Cherokee Freedmen) My great grandmother was Henrietta Austin of Bartlesvile. Willie Mae , her sister (my great aunt) was married to Roy Ledman who I believe may be the same one who was your relative.. He was long deceased by the time I would visit in the 60s. You can e-mail me if you want at jokut10@comcast.net. My mother grew up in Bartlesville and might know more about your relatives. I know they all were Cherokee Freedmen. My mother, brother, sister, and I are Cherokee citizens...
