Re: History of Indian Fry Bread
![]() In Response To: Re: History of Indian Fry Bread ()
Frybread is a staple among most tribes and has been for over a hundred years in many instances. Frybread originated from the rations provided by the federal government after the decimation of the tribal economies. The Cherokees were issued wheat flour and lard while awaiting removal from our Southeastern home. Frybread was fast, easy and since there were no ovens, the only way to use the flour. The reason few people besides Cherokees themselves knew about our frybread tradition is we are not a pow-wow tribe and few pow-wow Indians come to our ceremonials or churches. You would have had to be invited into our homes, church and/or ceremonial ground to enjoy our style of frybread.
