57 yrs old my mother daisy bell portee...her father reuben portee...his father was french and cherokee born in s.carolina.
there were four brothers that came from france. one settled in the
carolina's one in ireland the other two i am not sure of. i am from
the lineage of the carolina portees. to my understanding they were
aristocrates and were forced to leave france. when the portee came to the carolina's i was told he changed his name from porteus or
something like that to portee. he had four sons. each was given a
large amount of land. the library at the university of s.c. was from land donated by the portees. in canada there is a casltle de la portee...i saw it and went inside. amazing. my clan to put it short
married into the cherokee and i was told that it was a chiefs daughter...the name is giga or gigga i am not sure of the spelling.
there were many rifts in the family but the white portees and those who married blacks to my knowledge were on speaking terms although there were some who were dissasociated from the family for various reasons...one in california who's family broke from the clan or actually were put out of the clan. i have much more info.
