Cherokee Surname

I am wondering if anyone knows anything about the Owens Surname. According to my cousin who is a Humbles, and the two books on Cherokee, our surname is on the Cherokee Dawes Rolls. I'm searching for WHICH individual is there. What I have so far, is they came from Jamestown, NC, in Guilford and Orange County NC. My great-great grandmother was Betwy Ann Owens Mayho -- the Mayho could have been spelled differently because she couldn't read or write. We have the papers that say she was a "Free woman" and had never been a slave. She was Mulatto. She was the wife of William Owens, born in 1836 and he was said to be "part Indian". They moved to Hio in about 1861 and had to have papers to show they were free.

They had two children -- Minerva Owens (17 months old in 1861) and William Henry Owens (2 months old in 1859). There were children Charlie (1868), Elmer (1871) and Laura (1869). So, I don't know more than that.

I'm attempting to trace the Native geneology and our family has had trouble finding the link to the Owens line. We have Freeman, Humbles, Rucker and one other I forget, in our lineage.

Does anyone know anything more about this group? Note: I have recently found that some of the AA in NC were also Chowan Indians, but my cousin Bernard, from PA, says that our family is decendant from Cherokee.

If anyone has any ideas of where to look...I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Diana
