Re: What happened to all those land allotments?
In Response To: What happened to all those land allotments? ()
Several years ago, I had a grandfather passed away at age 96. He used to tell me stories about freedmen and indians who were swindled out of their allotments. Too many freedmen and indians the idea of property taxes were foreign. My Grandfather told me one story of a family who were convinced by a white banker to allow him to take care of their tax problems. He further suggested that the family visit family in Kansas City while he took care of their problems. The family left and later returned to find that the banker had taken complete control of the property and had sold it. There are thousands of similiar stories.
