Re: Creek Old Series Cards
In Response To: Re: Creek Old Series Cards ()

Hello Donald,

Note that as a method of verifying whether a person was truly a part of the community that they claimed to be it was asked if they were listed on a previous roll. In the case of Creek Freedmen frequently you will see references to the Dunn Roll. With Choctaw Freedmen you will see references to the 1896 Roll, and with many Cherokees for their earlier affiliation with the tribe, you will see a reference to the 1880 Authenticated Cherokee Roll, and sometimes also to the Kern Clifton Roll. With Chickasaw Freedmen there is an infrequent reference to an earlier enrollment. With Seminole Freedmen there is a reference to the applicant's enrollment in their respective band (Dosar Barkus, or Caesar Bruner) and the reference was generally to their being part of the band in 1897. So in general the reference to earlier rolls was a sort of "verification" of affiliation with the respective tribe.
