Re: DICKSON/DIXON--VA
In Response To: DICKSON/DIXON--VA ()

Just a quick update, then will post something longer on FPOC forum. A WV researcher helping me (Susan McCabe) sent me a couple of xeroxed pages from John Barden's dissertation (which I just ordered online through University Microfilms). It makes clear that the William Dixon/Dickson mentioned above, husband of Prue, was indeed the father of Sarah Tosspot, b. 1772-73, all three among the emancipated Carter slaves.

By way of explanation, I'm working on the biography of an African American woman who lived in Buffalo NY in the 1850s. She was friend and neighbor to the Timothy Tosspot family up there. Timothy of Buffalo is son of Sarah and Timothy Tosspot I, who settled in Winchester. Sons of the original couple settled in Cincinnati OH, PA, NY, in the 1830s and 1840s.

ps. Barden's dissertation seems important for any descendants of Carter emancipated slaves. "Flushed with Notions of Freedom: The Growth and Emancipation of a Virginia Slave Community, 1732-1812," Duke University, 1983. In the back section, there are brief biographies of many FPOC, drawn from meticulous research across records.
