Re: Slave Market Records, Fayetteville, NC

Alice-

To my knowledge there are no records of slaves being sold at the Market House, located in downtown Fayetteville. In fact, if I recollect correctly, there was a big to do some years ago regarding the refurbishing of the Market House, and the majority of the African American community not wanting to contribute towards its refurbishing, as the "city" denied slaves being sold there, and will only acknowledge that merchandise was sold there, (as if slaves were not considered merchandise). On another note, we, (my family), have always passed down that my grandmother's grandfather was sold at the "Ol' Market House."

You can check with the main library here as they have lots of information regarding Fayetteville's history, and the head librarian in the State and Local room is African American, and has a love for African American geneology.
