Of course they were human beings but it isn't likely that all slave holders/owners cared about that. They were put on the same lists with the agriculture.
There is no need to argue because that does not solve anything. Anyone who is researching their family "knows what time it is". This isn't about being on one side or the other since we are all on the same side.
