Re: Slaves Having the Same Name as Slave Owners

I do notice that in the areas of my research, in Cabarrus County and in Rowan County, N.C. that many of the African Americans do have the same surnames as many of the whites who live there. I am under a belief that some of those African Americans were slaves and they took on the slaveowners' last name as in Heilig. Some of the African Americans in my research never revealed that much as to why they have those surnames. Also, in my research, names like House, Faggert, Barringer, Blackwelder, Bost came from Germans who settled in N.C., and these names stick out a lot among both races, whether slave or free. Joseph
