Re: Can Practice make Perfect?

Thanks David,

And yes - practice helps. The more you use a particular data set/search program - the more used to the "quirks" of the program you become.

My students constantly complain that they "can't find" information on a particular topic - and I tell them their problem is they don't know how to search and use resources.

This is true here too - a large number of people who are new to Afrigeneas don't use the resources right here - on this website.
We've got a wealth of data - on slavery, in the surnames database (researchers), in the archives of the mailing list, a search feature on each forum, a list of state & county resources on the States forum, specialized chat sessions, and a long list of others - but how many people take the time to learn to use them?

As the online services expand their features - you have to use them to figure out how they work. Lots of folks don't regularly use libraries - or microfilm, or NARA ...

As my grandma was fond of saying "practice makes perfect", so yes - I keep practicing - and hope some other folks will join me in "practicing" on a rich resource. And also learning through the process.

Denise
