Can Practice make Perfect?
In Response To: Use the Slave Narratives - James Washington MS ()
Denise, you have begun a really super series with this post. You made me think of something that I have never before associated with genealogy: practice! We practice before a sports event, we rehearse before making a presentation, writers practice writing, historians practice their craft in grad school before publishing --- even doctors practice in medical school before they operate on us (thank heavens!). So why do we just plunge right into our most important genealogical research without so much as a dry run with the basic resources? Your idea is simply wonderful: when we get to a brick wall, practice on someone else's family. The insights gained can only make us more skillful and experienced, able to bring greater mental powers to bear on our primary research when we feel ready to return to it.
