Greetings Slavery Researchers:
I found a fascinating article published in 1863 that describes a slave auction at the Butler Plantation in Savannah which took place in 1849. Entitled "WHAT BECAME OF THE SLAVES ON A GEORGIA PLANTATION?", it may reveal some clues to someone's ancestry. One of the names mentioned is Mingo, a name frequently researched on Afrigeneas. Equally important, are the names and descriptions of the slaves sold over two days.
David Paterson, Forum Manager here, is probably aware of this article and the invaluable information that it contains. For me it underscores the close proximity and relationship to South Carolina's Low Country rice plantations. It's a cautionary reminder that research in neighboring states might uncover the history of my ancestors in Charleston. The industry that links both states is rice.
Enjoy the article and let this Forum know if you found any links to your family.
