There was nothing in the Emancipation Records on the name Cherry. However, I have another book by Mr. Byrd called "North Carolina General Assembly Sessions Records: Slaves and Free Persons of Color, 1709-1789", which contains various records of Court Actions involving slaves and they had this entry, which may or may not be of any help:
Committee of Claims
LUKE, a Slave
6 November 1766
JOHN CHERRY was allowed his Claim of Eighty Pounds for a Negro man named LUKE who was Executed in Beaufort County and valued by the Court who tried him to that as by Certificate filed.
