Hutzel slaves

Upon receiving a book entitled Our Hutzel Heritage, I have been trying to research the genealogy of a mother and her three children who were born into slavery.

The mother's name was Mariah who was born before 1826 in Wythe,Virginia. Mariah was sold for $400.00 to John Hounshell and later given to John and Christiana Hutzel. When Mariah became a woman, she gave birth to three children. Anderson, Francis, and Arthur. I belive that John Hutzel was the father of all three children. The second to own Mariah and her children was John's brother Andrew who bought them for $1,100.00 about 5 Sept 1839. Mariah passed away about 1850 in McMinn,TN and her children were sold to Thomas Upton between november and december of 1849.

If anyone has any information on what happened next to her children I would love to hear from you. It is believed that two of the children were sold out of state but no further information is known. Arthur was shot by a white man but the date is unknown.

Thank you,
Kate
