Re: Looking in Alabama
In Response To: MOBLEY Looking in Alabama ()

Hello Lisa

I tried to respond to you on yesterday and I still haven't seen it post. So, here we go again.

I am also researching Dallas County,Alabama for the following surnames: French, Hunter, Weaver, Tyus, Moultrie. If you can provide the precinct in which your ancestors resided, I can give you a list of slave holders from that precinct from the 1860 slave schedule.
Also, have you checked the 1866 Alabama State Census? This census lists african-american heads of households only, but they are listed under the plantation on which they resided. It may have an actual plantation name, or it may have the slaveholder's name. Not all Alabama counties took the state census this way, but Dallas County did. At any rate, if you can find your relatives there, you most likely have found the slave owner since this was just after slavery had ended.
