Re: Cancer Plantation Slaves
In Response To: Re: Cancer Plantation Slaves ()

Denise,
By way of a small explanation -
In 1791 Robert "Councillor" Carter manumitted 507 slaves on his plantations. In his writ of manumission he listed the slaves by name (no last names), age, and plantation. His northern Virginia plantation was originally called Cancer. This was then divided into 2 plantations Cancer and Leo. Cancer was later called Liberia and Leo was called Oatlands.

In looking at the 1791 manumission for Cancer there is no Hannah listed. However, in looking at Leo/Oatlands there is indeed a Hannah (age 57). She is listed as the wife of "Baptist" Billy (age 66). He also manumits Betty, age 32 (dau. of Billy), Charlotte, age 11 (dau. of Betty); John, age 7 (son of Betty), Billy, age 5 (son of Betty); Easter, age 2 (dau. of Betty), Winney or Winny, age 31, dau. of Bapt. Billy; Enoch, age 12 (son of Winny); Nelly, age 9 (dau. of Winny); William age 29, son of Billy. Do any of these names sound familiar to you? If so, then you need to notify me immediately. I can connect you to a man who has done a good piece of geneology on this family. It is his family.

Best Regards and Good Luck,
Paula

Remember these records are as 1791.
